I've spent ten years shipping software and managing infrastructure at some of the most interesting DevOps companies around — Octopus Deploy, CircleCI, and Vercel. I've seen what works, what doesn't, and what's genuinely overpriced.

This blog exists because every week someone asks me: "What's a good alternative to X?" — and every week I give the same answers. So I figured I'd write them down.

No affiliate links. No sponsored content. Just honest comparisons from someone who's been in the room when these decisions actually matter.

Why Whisky Bob? Two reasons. First: the best architecture decisions happen over a good dram. You can disagree with me. Just bring something peaty.

Second, and more practically: the companies I currently work with would not be thrilled about some of the recommendations on this blog. I suggest alternatives to tools their sales teams are actively pitching. Keeping a pseudonym means I can be honest without making anyone's quarterly targets awkward.
